For some businesses the honest answer is no — an Instagram page is enough, and a website would be a cost with no return this year.
Saying which businesses those are is the only thing that makes the yes believable. So here is the actual test, and it has nothing to do with looking professional.
The test: how does somebody find you when they need you?
Everything turns on one question. When a person needs what you sell, do they search for it, or do they come across it?
If they come across it — scrolling, from a friend's share, from a reel that travelled — Instagram is where that happens, and Instagram is already the right tool. A website does not help a person who was not looking.
If they search for it — typing "interior designer in Prayagraj" or "CNC job work Kanpur" into a phone — that person is on Google, and Instagram cannot reach them. Instagram pages do not appear in Google results in any way you can rely on or control.
Most businesses have some of both. The question is which one pays your bills.
Four situations where Instagram genuinely stops being enough
These are the specific cases. If none of them describes you, you can stop reading and keep posting.
1. Your customer has to send your details to somebody else. This is the big one, and it is almost always a B2B business. A purchase manager who likes your work has to forward it to a director for approval. He cannot forward a feed. He needs a link that opens into something that looks like a company — what you make, what you have delivered, where you are, how to raise a purchase order. An Instagram profile forwarded upward reads as a person's account, not a supplier.
2. People search for your service by name. If somebody who has never heard of you would type your service and your city into Google, every one of those searches currently goes to a competitor. That is not a branding problem, it is a distribution one — and it is the one thing a website does that nothing else does. How to actually win those searches is a separate job; we wrote about it in making a website that ranks locally.
3. The same questions arrive in your DMs every day. Price, timing, location, what is included, do you deliver here. Every one of those is a page you write once instead of typing forty times a month. When the answering is taking real hours out of your week, a website has started paying for itself in time before it brings a single new customer.
4. You take money against a formal quote. Advance payments, GST invoices, milestone schedules. A customer about to transfer a large amount wants something that looks accountable, and a business that exists only inside an app run by another company does not read that way to most Indian buyers over a certain ticket size.
And the situations where a website would genuinely be wasted
This is the part most agencies will not write down.
A visual product that sells to individuals, closing in DMs. Clothing, jewellery, cakes, home bakers, mehndi, photography, boutiques. Your customer buys with her eyes, discovers you by scrolling, and orders by messaging. A website adds a step to a process that is working without one. Post more; build later.
A business that is already at capacity. If you are turning work away, more enquiries are not the problem. Spend the money on whatever is actually limiting you.
A business with nothing to show yet. A website with three stock photographs and no real work on it is worse than no website, because it is checkable. Do a few jobs, photograph them properly, then build. In a small town a customer recognises stock photography instantly, and the moment they do, the site stops proving anything.
A shop where the customer walks in. A kirana, a chai stall, a salon on a main road. Your discovery problem is solved by Google Maps and a board, not by a website. Fill in a Google Business Profile — it is free and it takes an evening.
What a website does that a feed structurally cannot
Not a list of features. Three real differences.
It is findable by search. Somebody typing your service into Google is a person who has already decided to buy something and is only choosing from whom. That is the most valuable traffic in any small business, and it is unreachable from a social page.
It is an address you own. Your Instagram account exists because a company lets it. Accounts get restricted, hacked, or lost with a phone number, and the recovery process is a form, not a phone call. A domain in your own name cannot be taken from you the same way — provided it is genuinely in your name, which is its own trap and one we wrote about in who actually owns your website.
It answers a specific question fast. Feeds are built for browsing. A person who wants one number — your rate for a specific size, whether you deliver to a specific pincode — is badly served by scrolling through posts. That mismatch is what fills your DMs.
The honest middle option
There is a step between "nothing" and "a full website", and for a lot of businesses it is the right answer this year.
One page. What you do, who for, a few real photographs of real work, your area, your prices or a price range, and a button that opens WhatsApp. That is enough to be findable, enough to forward, and enough to answer the repeated questions. It is not a compromise version of a website — for a single-service local business it is frequently the correct final answer, and adding pages to it later is easy.
Do that, keep posting on Instagram, and link the two: the bio points at the page, the page shows the feed. They are not competing. Instagram creates demand from people who were not looking for you; the page captures demand from people who already are.
How to decide this week
Open your DMs and read the last thirty conversations. Two questions:
How many started with somebody who did not already know you or know somebody who did? If the answer is most of them, Instagram is doing the job and you do not have a discovery problem to solve.
How many were the same four questions? If the answer is most of them, you do not have a marketing problem — you have an answering problem, and one page fixes it.
If neither number is high, the useful thing to do is nothing, for now. That is a real answer and we would rather give it than sell you a project. When one of those numbers changes, you will know, and what it costs to act on it is set out in what a website really costs in India.
