It is free, it takes about twenty minutes, and a striking number of eligible businesses have never done it.
What Udyam is
Udyam is the government's registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar. Registering gives you a permanent Udyam Registration Number and a certificate, and it is the document that proves MSME status when you want to claim anything that depends on it.
Classification runs on two numbers together — investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. Both are picked up automatically from your PAN and GST data rather than self-declared, which is why the registration itself is so short.
What it actually gets you
Protection on delayed payments. This is the one that matters most and gets discussed least. Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a registered MSME within the agreed period, and in any case within 45 days. Beyond that, interest is payable at a penal rate, and there is a facilitation council mechanism to pursue it.
For a small supplier being strung along by a large buyer, this changes the conversation. You are no longer asking for a favour; you are pointing at a statutory obligation. Very often the invoice gets paid at the point the buyer realises you are registered.
Access to credit. MSME lending counts toward banks' priority sector targets, so a registered enterprise is a more attractive borrower. Several collateral-free guarantee schemes require Udyam registration as a precondition.
Tender preference. Government and public sector procurement carries reservations and relaxations for MSEs — exemption from earnest money deposit, relaxed turnover and experience criteria.
Subsidies and reimbursements. Various central and state schemes for certification costs, patent and trademark fees, technology upgrades and electricity duty. These change; check what is live in Uttar Pradesh at the time you need it.
What it does not do
It does not reduce your GST or income tax. It does not exempt you from any filing. It does not by itself get you a loan — it improves your standing with lenders who are already inclined to lend.
How to register
On the government Udyam portal, with:
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, or an authorised director
- PAN of the enterprise
- GSTIN, where GST registration is required
The portal validates against PAN and GST records directly. No documents are uploaded and no fee is charged.
Two cautions. First, there are many private sites that look official and charge for what the government does free — check you are on the real portal. Second, information must be updated when your investment or turnover changes bracket; failing to update can suspend the registration.
Worth doing this week
For a business already filing GST and income tax, this is twenty minutes for a permanent entitlement. The delayed-payment protection alone justifies it if you supply anyone larger than yourself.
If you would rather not deal with the portal, our compliance desk does Udyam registration alongside GST, company and trademark filings.
